Régis Gautreau in the show The listeners have the floor of October 25, 2023
Today, as Régis Gautreau was returning from the Pornichet market after having endured gusts of wind all morning, he peacefully got back into his truck and mechanically turned on the radio. That's when he came across the RTL show "Les auditeurs ont la parole" which was today dealing with the theme of Made In France . He then tried his luck and called the switchboard and was offered the chance to go on air to chat with Eric Brunet. Nice, right?
You can find the podcast of this exchange on the RTL website by following this link . Régis' intervention takes place from 00:58:36 to 01:03:10.
Thanks to Mr. Brunet and his team for their welcome and their kindness, we now hope to see them again at the MIF expo from November 9 to 12. The invitation is in any case launched.
Below is a transcript of the exchange:
EB: Eric Brunet, host of the show | RG: Régis Gautreau, founder of Berthe Aux Grands Pieds
Here is the transcript:
EB : Régis is with us. Hello my dear Régis!
RG : Hello Eric Brunet!
EB : What are you doing, Régis?
RG : I created a brand 24 years ago called Berthe Aux Grands Pieds, 100% made in France. I have been doing the Made In France show since the beginning, 10 years ago. I was called a thief 24 years ago because I was selling socks for €15 a pair and today people tell me what a great deal Régis is!
EB : So French brand socks! Berthe Aux Grands Pieds and everyone was making fun of you and today we rush. So what is your positioning exactly?
RG : Eric Brunet, it's very simple, I'm an extraterrestrial when everyone goes right, I go left. Today I don't just make socks, today I collaborate with eight 100% French manufacturers. I make socks, I also make tights. So, socks, can I name the companies I work with? Because it's important!
EB : Go ahead!
RG : These are beautiful French manufacturers. First of all, Manufacture Perrin, they will celebrate their hundredth anniversary next year, Montceau-les-Mines, Saône-et-Loire and 40% of their turnover is Berthe Aux Grands Pieds.
EB : Long live the Perrin Manufacture
RG : But yes, but yes!
EB : I love old historic boxes like that, besides we have the right to quote them, it's heritage, it's heritage at that stage. There you go!
RG : It's important because you know... Well then, Lener Cordier, pea coats made in Hazebrouck, shoes made in Montjean-sur-Loire in Maine-et-Loire, gloves in Oise, tights at Sotexmi in the South of France, in the Cévennes. Listen, sweaters made in Nantes at Royal-Mer. Very important. Very, very beautiful house! I'll tell you if we don't do that, we won't have the know-how anymore. Today we have three imperatives: manufacture 100% in France, we mustn't play on words and there are plenty of things to say. It has to be sexy, because when it's ugly it's dead. It has to be very beautiful. Don't be afraid of prices, make something very beautiful, post-war specifications and that way we build a loyal dream clientele.
EB : You heard my wife earlier who said in the glasses….
RG : Of course.
EB : She is in glasses and French brands. She has them manufactured in France. And she tells me I have competitors today on the next shelf at the optician who also put made in France, only everything comes from Asia and they just make the hinges in France or something like that and they benefit from the label made in France.
RG : She's right but I have bad news for your wife, or good news, that is to say that I am launching glasses made in Nantes. Berthe Aux Grands Pieds with a sock thread in the material, that's planned for next year, 100% made in France. But you know it's true, Made in France is a real subject. I believe that today we really have to manufacture in France, we mustn't cheat on words, we mustn't make things ambiguous because people who discover one day that a sweater is actually made in China, when we think it's made in France, then we don't believe in anything anymore. We really have to respect consumers. It really has to be clear. When it says Made in France today, it's made in France, okay, there you go!
EB : He's good!
RG : No, no, I'm passionate. Listen, this morning, I was at the Pornichet market, because I go to markets in the West of France to talk about my products, to sell my products. I'm selling a pea coat for €700. Okay. Socks for €28, but it's not a big deal, we'll explain everything, but yes.
EB : I have some great information to give you.
RG : Go ahead!
EB : Berthe Aux Grands Pieds, is that the name of your brand?
RG : Yes!
EB : Well, historically Berthe Au Grand Pied is…
RG : didn't have big feet
EB : Yes, there is only one big foot. Did you know that? I don't remember why, but I discovered that in a history textbook a few years ago. I don't remember why.
RG : Eric Brunet, I was simply making you laugh but it's the truth, on June 4, 1999, I went to register a brand of socks Berthe Au Grand Pied is not registered, I said okay I'm registering it. I registered it in the singular. Because the real one is the mother of Charlemagne, the wife of Pepin the Short, 721-780, she had a club foot that's the problem. But yes, but the problem Eric Brunet is that there is one French person in fifteen who knows the History of France. I was doing the markets and I said to myself if I put it in the singular, they will all take me for someone who makes a spelling mistake.
EB : But you are right!
EB : It's great. Régis, you'll send me €752 because I gave you free publicity. It'll work like that from now on.
RG : No, but come see me at Made In France!
EB : Very well, we will come and see you. You have to live on the advertising page. I kiss you. Bye Régis.
